Trudging across the sandy area outside the fort, Sofia couldn't help but think about her time in Cairo. It hadn't been very productive. She'd cleared one, maybe two, virus-ridden areas in a month. Neither of them held very much. No new building materials, either. Just old tents and a couple vampires.
Not that that wasn't small. Vampires were still pretty nasty, at least a 6 on a nastiness scale from 1 to 10. But they were the same old thing. What she really wanted to do was get farther into the city, where some nastier critters were crawling around.
Of course, that would have to go by Aaron and Ash, and she was skeptical that they would approve.
Those two... she seriously debated whether or not they were a good reason to leave. But as soon as it came, she shook that thought from her head. Where would she have gone?
The hairs on the back of her neck started to go up. Someone was watching her. She looked up, and actually jumped when she saw that she was at the gate to the fort. The heavy sheet metal door stood in front of her, and she suddenly realized why someone would be watching her.
She walked up to the gate, curled up a fist, and banged it on the metal door.
Three bangs. Pause. Bang. Pause. Bang.
That was the signal. But after tapping her foot for a good three minutes, she just yelled "Hello! Whoever's back there! Open the damn door!"

Blake had been circling the area for awhile. He had began to grow accustomed to these new abilities, and also had noticed his inability to eat, well, anything at all. This he found a first frightening but he had grown accustomed to it. He'd been keeping close to the humans territory as for him it was actually the safest place to be in a way. No monsters would bother him, and he'd managed to hide from the humans. At one point someone had been hunting, had seen him, and Blake had pretended to be part of the group, and the idiot had bought it.
Blake wanted to get in on the humans side, one part because he liked humans, on the other to get close to Eve, which was more then a little stupid on his part but he would still try at least, no harm in that right? Blake wasn't sure, he could hardly tell her right? She'd kill him. He could hardly not tell her, that would be unfair and wrong towards her. He'd know all her buttons and he'd know how to do it, and she wouldn't know why. But, he couldn't let someone else have her either.
Blake had been sneaking around the area, and had finally decided that he was getting in. As he watched from some random dirt mound he looked down at some scary looking woman there who was trying to get in. Perhaps, perhaps she was approachable...after all Blake did seem human, he bled, he needed to breath, he just...didn't eat.
"Um, yo-your human right?" he asked softly standing up, raising his hands, palms facing her to show he carried no weapon, and didn't choose to approach her "Please help me...I've lost my family...I don't know where to go...those things will kill me if I try to leave the city..." he said to her softly looking the picture of upset, because in a way he was, and he had lost all those things, but he also seemed oddly dazed, which he was also, he'd no idea what to think or why he was thinking it, everyone was gone, his mum, his dog, and all he could thing was 'she's still alive'

At the first noise she heard, Sofia spun around with her gun already in hand. She stood there for a couple seconds after she had caught sight of the man, with her gun out of the holster but not quite aimed, while her mind processed the fact that the man before her was human. After her brain realized this fact, and that he was unarmed and not approaching, she holstered her gun. But she kept her palm near it, remembering what appeared to be a child reaching over and biting her arm open.
"Please help me...I've lost my family...I don't know where to go...those things will kill me if I try to leave the city..."
Upon these words, her heart went out to the boy. She couldn't help it when it came to kids. If a five-year-old came running up to her with tears in its eyes, she softened up like butter in a microwave. Forgetting all caution, she approached the boy with her hands out to show that she wouldn't kill him. About five feet away, she stopped, and said "Of course, I'll take you in with me." She looked back at the door with a scowl on her face worthy of Wild Things. "If they'll let me in..."

Blake didn't move an inch as her h and went to her gun, partly out of fear, but mainly out of the fact he couldn't yet move, well he could, and almost normally, but those finer details of human life had yet to become acquired, flinching being one of them, palpitation and the requirement of food others, but in truth he wasn't sure if they'd ever return to him. His skin was pale and smooth, he looked as though he wasn't sure even where he was really, as though still in shock, not utterly unheard of, though perhaps a little unlikely from someone who should have managed to survive this world for weeks.
He could tell she was warming up to him though despite his distraught present as he told himself he should look calmer, more collect, not as though he'd just woken to this horrible world. Blake gave a small smile as she went over to him, relief clear in his features.
"Thanks" he spoke softly, quietly, his eyes fixated upon a small stone on the ground "I-I was in my families house out in the coutry over the mid-term when it hit..."
Yes that was right Blake had it all sorted out, a background story, a life which wasn't his own, lies upon lies, because if what that vampire had told him was true these people would kill him on sight if he told the truth, and for that he couldn't blame them.
"Your the first actual um...'human' Ive seen in weeks" At least that part was almost true, however he had seen Eva, but that was different, he couldn't have gone with her, he wasn't ready "Maybe it's because I'm here?" Blake offered "Maybe they think your being followed by one of those things...?"
Blake's mind suddenly froze as he realized, should he lie about his name? why hadn't he thought this through? Eva would have known him if he told...so would her brother....name he needed a new name...

Sofia turned and kneeled down in front of the boy. After he had finished the run-down on his life story, she reached over and set both her hands on his shoulders. "It's fine now. You're okay." When he mentioned the words "being followed", the logical side of her brain snapped into focus. She didn't even hear the context, but she remembered something.
If noone was at the gate to answer, then why was she getting the feeling that someone was watching her?
She looked past the boy, and her eye caught a mangled, humanoid form aiming a gun at her. She didn't know what it was, or how it had gotten a gun. Her reflexes kicked into action before she could ask questions. She fell onto her side, pushing the boy down with her, as she pulled out her gun. It's first shot missed narrowly, but her two were perfectly aimed. Heart and head.

Blake shot her a nervous, frightened smile "thank you" he said softly running a hand through his hair awkwardly, dying for a bath. As a new presence touched the edge of his mind Blake took in a soft gasp as the creature raised the gun, images of their mangled corpses coming instantly slamming into his mind as his figure hit the ground.
Two shots were heard over head, he thought his eardrums might burst at the sound of them, his ears rang loudly as his whisked his head around toward the now deceased creature Blake had cut down his arm, from his shoulder to his elbow. It wasn't terribly deep, but deep enough that the blood began to seep into his shirt, his fingers heated to the point where if he touched Sofia he'd likely burn her, but not quite full fledged flames. He moved his hands away from her, a soft sizzling sound could be made out as the heat met damp ground, but alas the ringing in his ears blocked out his knowledge of the fact as he caught his breath from the shock of attack, the pain in his arm not yet registering with his brain. An effect violence should have only held with someone unaccustomed to violence, though Blake was trying to play if off that he had survived on his own all this time, but if that were the case freezing up after an attack should have surpassed him no?
Shakily Blake returned to reality as did his hearing "Oh shit, oh shit..." he whispered under his breath, Blake had seen many corpses, and most of them he could barely contain his lunch over, but this was the first genuine kill he'd witnessed. He looked over at Sofia, an innocent frightened gleam within them before he forced a smile, pressing himself up onto his feet, though swaying a little vicariously as he glanced back at the mangled creature "C-close call huh?" He attempted to make himself seem, what? cool? 'oh yeah Blake real smooth, you look like a genuine murderer right now so ya do' he thought cynically to himself

Sofia sat there for several seconds, waiting to make sure it was dead. The boy next to her was squirming, probably because he hadn't seen many dead things before. The fact that he was murmuring "Oh shit," over and over again supported her theory. Which was fine with her. He couldn't have been anything over 20, and she wasn't expecting him to be a cold-blooded killer.
If he hadn't reacted, she'd probably have shot him, too.
A slight feeling of warm wetness found it's way into her lug and tugged her out of that thought. She looked down at her leg, and saw that the boys arm was bleeding. Her mind snapped into focus and she started tearing off a strip from the bottom of her shirt. She wrapped that strip around his arm and tied it off.
"There," she said, inspecting her handiwork. "That should hold for a while."
Behind her, she heard the door open and a voice that said "Sofia, get your ass in here. And bring the kid, too."
Complying to the voice, she murmured "Finally. About freaking time," as she walked through the open doorway.
